About the Book

Entre 1841 et 1844, Edgar Allan Poe a inventé le genre de la fiction policière avec trois histoires fascinantes d'un jeune homme excentrique nommé C. Auguste Dupin. Introduisant à la littérature le concept de l'application de la raison pour résoudre un crime, ces histoires ont donné la gloire et la fortune de Poe. "Double assassinat dans la rue Morgue" est une nouvelle d'Edgar Allan Poe publiée dans le Graham's Magazine en 1841. On prétend qu'elle est la première histoire de détective; Poe l'a désignée comme l'une de ses histoires de raisonnement . Étant le premier vrai détective de fiction, le personnage de Dupin a établi de nombreux dispositifs littéraires qui seraient utilisés dans les futurs détectives fictifs, y compris Sherlock Holmes et Hercule Poirot. Beaucoup de personnages plus tard, par exemple, suivent le modèle Poe du détective brillant, son ami personnel qui sert de narrateur, et la révélation finale présentée avant le raisonnement qui y conduit. Le même Dupin réapparaît dans "Le mystère de Marie Rogêt" et dans "La lettre volée".
About the Author: Edgar Allan Poe (Boston, USA, 19 janvier 1809 - Baltimore, USA, 7 octobre 1849) fut un écrivain, poète, critique et journaliste romantique américain, généralement reconnu comme l'un des maîtres universel de la nouvelle, dont il fut l'un des premiers pratiquants dans son pays. Il fut un rénovateur du roman gothique, reconnu en particulier pour ses histoires d'horreur. Considéré comme l'inventeur de l'histoire policière, il contribua également à plusieurs oeuvres du genre émergent de la science-fiction, mais il fut le premier écrivain américain de renom à tenter d'écrire son modus vivendi, ce qui eut pour lui des conséquences lamentables.
