Guardiagrele, la città di pietra, risplendeva al sereno di maggio. Un vento fresco agitava le erbe su le grondaie. Santa Maria Maggiore aveva per tutte le fenditure, dalla base al fastigio, certe pianticelle delicate, fiorite di fiori violetti, innumerevoli cosicché l'antichissimo Duomo sorgeva nell'aria cerulea tutto coperto di fiori marmorei e di fiori vivi. (Gabriele D'Annunzio dal Trionfo della morte[1]) Trionfo della morte è un romanzo del 1894 di Gabriele D'Annunzio. Si tratta dell'ultimo della cosiddetta trilogia dei Romanzi della Rosa dopo Il piacere e L'innocente. Esempio di romanzo psicologico, nel quale la trama e l'intreccio cedono il posto all'introspezione della coscienza del protagonista, Giorgio Aurispa, nella cui mente si svolge l'intera vicenda romanzesca. Il romanzo, che apre con un passo dell'Al di là del bene e del male di Friedrich Nietzsche nell'esergo, sviluppa il tema del superomismo così come interpretato dall'allora trentunenne d'Annunzio. Trama Giorgio Aurispa è un giovane abruzzese colto e raffinato di nobile discendenza che ha abbandonato il paese natìo per trasferirsi a Roma, scevro da qualsiasi impiego, grazie all'eredità lasciatagli dalla morte del suicida zio Demetrio. Intesse una relazione con una donna sposata, Ippolita Sanzio, che deciderà poi di abbandonare il marito in favore del protagonista. Il rapporto sentimentale nato tra i due ha quell'intensità violenta e sensuale cara a D'Annunzio, così come lo Sperelli ne Il piacere, e al suo modo decadente di descrivere la passione come opera d'arte. La soggettività dell'impostazione narrativa è anche dovuta al peculiare carattere dell'eroe dannunziano, malato, debole e gelosamente chiuso in se stesso, per il quale la realtà umana si rivela senza speranza, vuota ed inutile. Persino l'amore per Ippolita alla fine non è capace di dare alcuna consolazione ed al protagonista non rimane altra scelta che quella di porre fine al "mal di vivere" che gli è insopportabile. Come nel Piacere anche in questo romanzo vi sono abbondanti ricorsi simbolici, come per il suicidio iniziale che presagisce la morte del protagonista.
