Tristan und Isolde ist eine der bekanntesten Liebesgeschichten aller Zeiten. Der mutige und listige Ritter Tristan nimmt es auf sich, einen Drachen zu toten, um die schone Isolde zu gewinnen. Im Auftrag seines Onkels. Doch die beiden jungen Menschen verfallen einer unsterblichen Liebe zueinander, die auch nach Isoldes Hochzeit nicht enden will. Sie begehen Ehebruch. Dieter Kuhns kongeniale Ubertragung eroffnet einen lebendigen Blick auf das sagenhafte Mittelalter, dessen Sorgen und Note unseren so ahnlich sind. Gottfried von Straßburg, Verfasser der um 1210 entstandenen bedeutendsten mhd. Tristandichtung. Der Name des Autors ist nur durch spatere mhd. Dichter uberliefert. Lebensdaten sind keine bekannt. Ob der Beiname von Straßburg Herkunfts- oder Wirkungsort (bzw. beides) bezeichnet, ist offen. In den Handschriften wird G. in der Regel als meister (Magister) bezeichnet, Hinweis auf seine lat. Bildung. Da er nirgends als her erscheint, geht man von einer nichtadeligen Herkunft aus. Man nimmt eine Beziehung zum Straßburger Stadtpatriziat an, in dessen Kreis man auch den im Akrostichon des Prologs verschlusselt genannten Gonner Dieterich vermutet. G. stutzte sich auf eine frz. Vorlage, den 'Tristan' des Thomas von Britanje (Thomas d'Angleterre), eine um 1170 entstandene hofische Version des Stoffes, die nur bruchstuckhaft uberliefert ist. Das Eigene der dt. Dichtung sind zum einen die Kommentare und Reflexionen, die das vielschichtige, anspielungsreiche, ambivalente und von einer ironischen Erzahlhaltung gepragte Werk durchdringen, zum andern die artistische Sprachkunst G.s, die Eleganz mit Prazision und Klarheit verbindet. Aus dieser Stilvorstellung erklart sich vermutlich seine Attacke auf den 'dunklen' Stil Wolframs v. Eschenbach, von dem sich G. auch in seiner skeptischen Auffassung vom Rittertumund seiner eher freizugigen Einstellung in religiosen Fragen unterscheidet. Daruber hinaus steht der von G. noch verscharfte Konflikt zwischen der elementaren Gewalt autonomer Liebe und der gesellschaftlichen Ordnung in deutlichem Gegensatz zu den harmonisierenden Tendenzen des dt. Artusromans. G.s Dichtung bricht mit Vers 19 548 ab; die Fortsetzer Ulrich v. Turheim (um 1240) und Heinrich v. Freiberg (um 1290) sprechen davon, dass der Tod den Dichter an der Vollendung seines Werkes gehindert habe.Dieter Kuhn, geboren 1935, ist freier Schriftsteller. Fur seine Romane, Biographien, Erzahlungen, Kinderbucher, Hor- und Schauspiele ausgezeichnet u. a. mit dem Hermann Hesse-Preis und dem Großen Literaturpreis der Bayerischen Akademie der Schonen Kunste. Er war Stadtschreiber von Bergen-Enkheim und Mainz. Der Autor lebt in Koln.
