El 20 de agosto de 1672, la ciudad de La Haya, tan animada, tan blanca, tan coquetona que se diría que todos los días son domingo, la ciudad de La Haya con su parque umbroso, con sus grandes árboles inclinados sobre sus casas góticas, con los extensos espejos de sus canales en los que se reflejan sus campanarios de cúpulas casi orientales; la ciudad de La Haya, la capital de las siete Provincias Unidas, llenaba todas sus calles con una oleada negra y roja de ciudadanos apresurados, jadeantes, inquietos, que corrían, cuchillo al cinto, mosquete al hombro o garrote en mano, hacia la Buytenhoff, formidable prisión de la que aún se conservan hoy día las ventanas enrejadas y donde, desde la acusación de asesinato formulada contra él por el cirujano Tyckelaer, languidecía Corneille de Witt, hermano del ex gran pensionario de Holanda. Si la historia de ese tiempo, y sobre todo de este año en medio del cual comenzamos nuestro relato, no estuviera ligada de una forma indisoluble a los dos nombres que acabamos de citar, las pocas líneas explicativas que siguen podrían parecer un episodio; pero anticipamos enseguida al lector, a ese viejo amigo a quien prometemos siempre el placer en nuestra primera página, y con el cual cumplimos bien que mal en las páginas siguientes; anticipamos, decimos, a nuestro lector, que esta explicación es tan indispensable a la claridad de nuestra historia como al entendimiento del gran acontecimiento político en la cual se enmarca. Corneille o Cornelius de Witt, Ruart de Pulten, es decir, inspector de diques de este país, ex burgomaestre de Dordrecht, su ciudad natal, y diputado por los Estados de Holanda, tenía cuarenta y nueve años cuando el pueblo holandés, cansado de la república, tal como la entendía Jean de Witt, gran pensionario de Holanda, se encariñó, con un amor violento, del estatuderato que el edicto perpetuo impuesto por Jean de Witt en las Provincias Unidas había abolido en Holanda para siempre jamás.
