About the Book

Tyler Teague and the Einstein Puzzle is the second in this series of young adult mysteries about a teenage detective named Tyler Teague. A couple of years have gone by, and Tyler is spending the weekend as a prospective student at St. John's College in Santa Fe, New Mexico. A statue has been stolen from the college, setting up a mystery in which Tyler must solve a logic puzzle, as happened in the previous story (Tyler Teague and the Particulars). Tyler is up against the same villains (The Particulars) as before. These stories are an entirely new type of mystery, the only mysteries that are truly solvable by the reader, because in each the mystery is based on a logic puzzle. Mr. Slakey has invented a new mystery sub-genre. A must-read for any mystery collector. This mystery is gripping and perfectly readable whether or not one wants to tackle the logic puzzle built into it. The differences between this book and the last are that this one is much longer, contains more logic puzzles, and the puzzles are much harder. The central "Einstein Puzzle" on which this mystery is based is said to be so difficult that only two percent of the population can solve it, a nice challenge. This book is a paean to St. John's College and to Santa Fe, New Mexico, both of which the author clearly loves. It is great reading for any fan of mysteries, anyone who enjoys both (right-brain) reading and (left-brain) puzzles, and anyone who wants to hear more about college life. Suppose you are a high school student in the throes of applying to colleges. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to read about what the college visit (prospective weekend) might be like? This book shows that, and it is difficult to find any other book that does.
About the Author: Author Tom Slakey Jr. was born May 23, 1960 in Annapolis, Maryland, and alternated living there, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and in Moraga California. His father (Tom Slakey Sr.) was a professor at St. John's College, the Great Books School. In 1968, his father took a sabbatical year, bringing the family to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Living here for a year at eight years old and attending regular Mexican 3rd grade in Spanish gave the author a lifelong talent with and love for foreign languages. Tom attended the Great Books program at St. John's College, at both the Annapolis and Santa Fe campuses. Reading the hundred or so great books of the western world in all disciplines from science to philosophy and discussing them in small groups was a superb education. After St. John's, Tom traveled around Europe on a Eurailpass for two months. At that time, you could get a two-month Eurailpass with unlimited rail travel for $300. Tom took full advantage of this, traveling to 23 countries, a tremendous experience that gave him a lifelong love of travel and adventure. The next adventure was the Peace Corps in Mali West Africa for 2 1/2 years, an amazing time. See more on this at Peace Corps. After finishing his Peace Corps tour, Tom traveled around the world for 10 months, then returned to the States. After some more computer programming work, Tom completed a Masters Degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) at UNM in Albuquerque. He then moved to Japan and taught English for 3 years, first to business people and then at a Junior College. He retains a great love for Japan, its culture and people. Tom moved back to the States in 1998 and began a career as a Technical Writer, in which he has continued to the present. He has worked on contracts at many big names: Westinghouse, eBay, HP, Intel, SBC, EMC, British Telecom, NASA, Safran, Smiths. Tom lives in Santa Clara, in the heart of Silicon Valley, with his wife Susan.
