Noch ist die Arbeit, Goethe in das Bewußtsein der Nation einzuführen, lange nicht vollendet. Wer die herrschende Bildung beobachtet hat, muß gestehen, daß die große Mehrzahl gar nicht ahnt, wieviel sie an Goethe besitzt. Selbst unter denen, die als Goethes Ausleger aufgetreten sind, haben sich nicht alle durch das Entzücken des poetischen Genusses und das Streben, auch andre daran teilnehmen zu lassen, zu ihrem Amte berufen geglaubt, sondern wurden vielmehr durch schulphilosophische Bedürfnisse, religiöse, politische, soziale Standpunkte, also mehr durch ein scholastisches und praktisches Interesse dazu geführt. Sie suchten an jenen Dichtungen die Gelegenheit, sie drängten sich den Inhalt schon mitbringend an sie heran, statt in unbefangener Hingabe die schöne Menschlichkeit und reine Darstellung auf sich wirken zu lassen und der Empfindung andrer näher zu bringen. So ist in den zahlreichen Schriften über Faust zwar jedes Wort, das in des Helden Monologen, in den Gesprächen mit Mephistopheles und Wagner ausgesprochen wird, zu einem heiligen Text geworden, zu dem die Noten und Exkurse sich häuften und welcher zu aller Art von Schriften und Verhandlungen Sprüche liefert, aber die wundervollen Szenen zwischen Faust und Gretchen, die Blüte des Werkes, wo die volle dichterische Schöpfungsmacht das ergreifendste individuelle Bild von Lieb und Leid des Menschenlebens vor uns hinwirft, bilden weiße Seiten, bei denen die geschäftige Interpretation schweigt.
