El magnífico monolito que los lugareños llaman "Uluru", situado en el corazón de Australia, se cierne sobre un lecho irregular de álamos del desierto y praderas de spinifex. El entorno agradable, pero por lo demás poco excepcional, de este fascinante monolito de arenisca no hace sino acentuar su majestuosidad, que puede apreciarse desde diversos ángulos. Para los periquitos de color lima, los poderosos halcones pardos, los pasajeros de aviones y helicópteros y otras criaturas bendecidas con el don del vuelo, la roca de forma libre recuerda el fósil de un pez con púas, una punta de flecha deforme o quizá una peculiar concha marina teñida de ocre que asoma de la arena. Para los que contemplan la gema natural en tierra firme, esta belleza de color siena quemado y cima plana, marcada con hoyuelos, ondulaciones y crestas que le dan carácter, parece más bien una tortuga milenaria dormida, sobre todo con los ojos entrecerrados.

Aparte de su llamativo aspecto, Uluru, también conocido como "Ayers Rock", es mucho más que un monumento imperdible. Uluru representa un símbolo inimitable de vida y cultura, y un lugar de culto sagrado para los habitantes aborígenes de la región. Dada la larga y fascinante historia ligada a esta roca sagrada, el aura de misticismo y misterio que se aferra a Uluru no debería sorprender a nadie. No sólo la superficie escamosa de la roca cambia de color a lo largo del día -pasando de un violeta intenso con toques grises a un lila claro, a un rojo anaranjado ardiente durante el amanecer, y de su habitual dorado albaricoque a un naranja desvaído y a un rosa violáceo de ensueño al anochecer-, sino que Uluru, dicen, es una fuente inagotable de sucesos inexplicables y sucesos paranormales.

Aunque los nativos no han escatimado esfuerzos en subrayar la importancia espiritual y cultural de la roca para los aborígenes, sus ruegos a los visitantes para que la respeten han sido repetidamente ignorados. De hecho, la falta de cortesía mostrada hacia Uluru se ha acentuado en los últimos años, y los habitantes de la tierra se han visto obligados a navegar por la llamada era del "influenciador de las redes sociales". Miles de turistas pululan por la roca cada año, metiendo la cabeza por las mirillas aborígenes y haciendo pretenciosas poses de yoga con pies de foto a juego. En 2010, una bailarina exótica de 25 años de origen francés llamada Alizee Sery enfureció a los internautas de todo el mundo cuando subió a la cima del Uluru y se desnudó sin más ropa que un sombrero de ganadero akubra, una braguita de bikini y unas botas go-go blancas. Sery habló con varios medios de comunicación poco después y defendió el strip-tease, filmado para un documental, que según ella era un homenaje a los pueblos indígenas. Según la explicación parcialmente paternalista de Sery, "'Mi proyecto es un homenaje a la grandeza del rock. Lo que hay que recordar es que, tradicionalmente, los aborígenes vivían desnudos. Así que desnudarse fue una vuelta a cómo era". Los ancianos aborígenes, por su parte, tacharon de "estúpida" la maniobra de llamar la atención y la compararon con hacer sus necesidades en la escalinata del Vaticano. En palabras de Kon Vatskalis, Ministro del Gobierno del Territorio del Norte: "¿Cómo se sentirían... los franceses si un australiano bailara semidesnudo en el altar de Notre Dame?".
