About the Book

Mikhaïl Youriévitch Lermontov (1814-1841) est un romancier, dramaturge et poète russe. Fils d'un capitaine en retraite appartenant à la petite noblesse; orphelin de mère à moins de trois ans, il est élevé par sa grand-mère maternelle, riche aristocrate. Il reçoit une brillante éducation qu'il poursuit à la section des sciences morales et politiques de l'Université de Moscou, foyer militant de pensée libérale à l'époque de la réaction qui suit l'écrasement des décembristes. Officier de hussards à Tsarkoé-Sélo, il partage la vie mondaine et tumultueuse de ses camarades. Bouleversé par la mort de Pouchkine, il écrit un poème qui lui vaut d'être arrêté, puis envoyé sur le front du Caucase. Lermontov se distingua lors d'opérations militaires contre les montagnards et participa aux batailles les plus sanglantes de 1840. Issu de l'école des cadets de Saint-Pétersbourg, il est célèbre pour avoir écrit des oeuvres romantiques comme La Mort du poète (1837), Le Démon (1841) ou encore Un héros de notre temps (1841). L'audace dont il fait preuve dans La mort du poète lui vaut d'être muté dans le Caucase en tant qu'officier des dragons, d'où son surnom de poète du Caucase . Son supérieur direct sollicita son retour dans la garde, ce qui, en fait, équivalait à demander sa grâce. En 1841, le tsar ne lui accorda qu'un congé de deux mois. Lorsque celui-ci prit fin, le tsar refusa de confirmer les décorations qui avaient été proposées pour Lermontov au Caucase, et le général Kleinmichel exigea son retour immédiat au Caucase. Le 14 avril 1841, Lermontov quitta Saint-Pétersbourg. Il ne lui restait que trois mois à vivre. Il fut tué en duel par Nikolaï Martynov. Le romantisme de Lermontov exprime la révolte et l'amertume de toute une génération. Son inspiration fougueuse, la violence de sa lucidité, enfin les qualités plastiques et musicales de sa langue en font une des figures les plus hautes de la littérature russe.
