About the Book

Ten-year old Allen Crabtree Jr. finds that a completely new world has opened up for him when he moves in 1916 with his parents from his home in the city to the wilds of a small New Hampshire farming community. Taken from his oral history, he recounts in a series of wide-eyed personal stories how he learned about hard work on the family farm and tackling different jobs in his new home. Allen tells vividly how he learned to fish, hunt, and trap in the hills and streams there. He also remembers the many memorable fun times he had as a young boy a hundred years ago. This is a fascinating, first-person commentary on a time that has long vanished in history, profusely illustrated with old Effingham and family photos.
About the Author: The story teller of these NH folk talks is Allen F. Crabtree Jr., my father. He moved to the small town of Effingham, NH, with his family when he was ten in 1916. From the perspective of a wide-eyed youngster Allen tells about growing up on a small farm with his mother, father, and three brothers, his neighbors, and his life. Allen Jr. lived in Effingham until about 1927 when he left home to seek his fortune in Boston, but he kept close ties with the town that was his home for the rest of his life. In Massachusetts he worked a number of jobs before settling into a career as a Postal Transportation Clerk working on the mail trains for the U.S. Post Office. When Allen Jr. retired he moved back to Effingham in 1957 and lived there till his death in 1980. Allen F. Crabtree III is a writer, blueberry farmer, and antiquarian book dealer who lives in Sebago, Maine. He has had strong connection with Effingham for 60 years and is very familiar with the places his father talks about in his stories. He has transcribed these folk tales from his father's 1977 oral history and collected them in this book. In this revised edition of Uncle Charlie's Tapeworm Allen III has illustrated his father's stories with photos from old family albums. He has also included commentary on the stories and a brief Crabtree family genealogy.
