Edgar Morins sozio-anthropologischer Essay Le cinéma ou l'homme imaginaire von 1956 wurde seit seinem Erscheinen nur vergleichsweise sporadisch rezipiert - Morin selbst bezeichnet es später als marginal innerhalb seines Gesamtwerks. Dennoch wird Morins Abhandlung in den filmtheoretischen und filmtheoriegeschichtlichen Kontexten, in denen sie aufgegriffen und diskutiert wird, durchweg positiv und als zentral relevant für die Geschichte der Filmtheorie bewertet. Über diese widersprüchliche Rezeptionslage hinaus herrscht eklatante Uneinigkeit über die theoriegeschichtliche Positionierung von Morins Essay: So ordnen sowohl Vertreter semiologischer als auch Anhänger phänomenologischer Positionen Le cinéma ou l'homme imaginaire der Vorgeschichte ihrer jeweiligen Ansätze zu. Und auch andere theoriegeschichtliche Darstellungen lassen kein Gesamtkonzept von Morins Buch erkennen; es erscheint mithin als ein methodisch-disziplinär beliebig einzuordnendes Collagenwerk. Um den Aporien solcher Einordnungsversuche zu entgehen, bietet Philip Dreher in seiner vorliegenden Untersuchung über die Analyse der konzeptuellen Metapher des Films als Spiegel eine neue Lesart von Morins Essay an. Mit dem ordnenden und erläuternden Nachvollziehen der bezugsreichen Ausführungen des Essays wird deutlich, weshalb Morin den Film als einen ""anthropologischen Spiegel"" versteht und inwiefern diese Metapher paradigmatisch für seine Filmtheorie ist. Mit Hilfe der Metapher des Spiegels kann Le cinéma ou l'homme imaginaire so innerhalb der französischen Filmtheoriegeschichte historisch-systematisch zwischen klassischen und modernen Filmtheorien positioniert werden, zwischen André Bazin und Christian Metz. Durch den Vergleich mit diesen beiden Autoren wird Morins spezifische Art, über den Film nachzudenken, herausgearbeitet.
