Bibliotheken 'fur das Volk' entstanden zaghaft in der Zeit der Aufklarung. Zwar kennen wir in Europa Kloster-, Fursten- und Universitatsbibliotheken seit dem Mittelalter, doch Buchersammlungen, bestimmt fur die Belehrung und Unterhaltung breiter Bevolkerungsschichten, kamen erst richtig im 19. Jahrhundert auf. Dabei handelte es sich anfangs um einfache Bucherausgabestellen mit wenigen Offnungsstunden. Der Besuch erfolgte nach Geschlecht, Alter und sozialer Schicht getrennt (Jugend-, Burger- und Arbeiterbibliothek). Um 1900 entwickelten sich dann in den Schweizer Stadten nach angelsachsischen Vorbildern eigentliche Offentliche Bibliotheken mit Lesesalen und Aufenthaltsraumen. Am Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts sind daraus intensiv genutzte Multimediazentren geworden, mit eigenen Kulturprogrammen und einem breiten Angebot fur Kinder, Jugendliche und Erwachsene. Die Allgemeinen Offentlichen Bibliotheken weisen meist die hochsten Besucherzahlen aller stadtischen Kulturinstitutionen auf und haben die grosste Breitenwirkung. Am Beispiel der Allgemeinen Bibliotheken der Gesellschaft fur das Gute und Gemeinnutzige Basel, der vermutlich altesten kontinuierlich bestehenden Allgemeinen Offentlichen Bibliothek uberhaupt, wird diese Entwicklung wahrend 200 Jahren in funf Etappen nachgezeichnet. Besonderes Gewicht legt das Autorenkollektiv dabei auf die Motivationen, die zur Grundung der Jugend-, Burger- und Arbeiterbibliotheken gefuhrt haben. Aber auch die Besonderheit, dass ein philanthropischer Verein wahrend rund 120 Jahren eine zentrale stadtische und kulturelle Dienstleistung alleine getragen hat, wird deutlich gemacht. Eingeleitet wird der Band durch einen Vergleich mit der Entwicklung in anderen europaischen Landern. Der Text wird erganzt durch reiches Bildmaterial aus Vergangenheit und Gegenwart der Bibliotheken und durch zusatzliche thematische Kastchen, die sich unter anderem mit der Lesefahigkeit der Bevolkerung, popularen Lesestoffen, Lesegesellschaften, Lesestoffdistribution und dem Bibliothekarberuf von heute befassen.
