In dieser Arbeit wird versucht, die vorkoloniale Sozialstruktur der Toba-Batak (Samosir, Nordsumatra) zu rekonstruieren. Da die Verwandtschaftsverhaltnisse (Lineage Organisation und asymmetrische Allianzstruktur) bei den Toba-Batak gleichzeitig als Produktionsverhaltnisse fungierten und somit das wichtigste Muster fur die okonomische und politische Organisation der Toba-Batak-Gesellschaft lieferten, kann deren Okonomie nicht als ein genau abgrenzbarer und relativ unabhangiger Bereich behandelt werden. Analog dazu ist es auch nicht moglich, bei den Toba-Batak einen separaten politischen Bereich bzw. rein politische Institutionen auszumachen. Die politische Organisation dieser Gesellschaft kann daher nur uber die Aufdeckung der politischen Aspekte der Verwandtschaft und daneben auch der Religion erschlossen werden. Aufgrund der dominanten Rolle der Verwandtschaft bei den Toba-Batak konnte sich keine zentrale Autoritat bzw. keine staatliche Organisation entwickeln. Im Gegensatz dazu entwickelten die Toba-Batak die Institution sakraler Fuhrer (Singamangaraja etc.), die oft als "Gottkonige" oder "Priesterkonige" bezeichnet wurden. Anders als Heine-Geldern, der die Singamangaraja- Institution als eine Ubernahme des Gottkonig-Konzepts indisierter Reiche Sudostasiens interpretierte, betrachtet der Verfasser die Entwicklung der Institution sakraler Fuhrer als Versuch der Etablierung einer Autoritat durch die Berufung auf eine nicht-verwandtschaftsbezogene ("gottliche") Machtquelle. Aus der dominanten Rolle der Verwandtschaft in der Toba-Batak-Gesellschaft resultierte die Begrenzung der Autoritat der sakralen Fuhrer. In Teil II des Buches wird die Sozialstruktur der prakolonialen Toba-Batak mit jenen einiger ethnischer Gruppen des festlandischen Sudostasiens, insbesondere der Jarai Vietnams und Kambodschas, verglichen. Der Verfasser versucht die Hypothese Heine-Gelderns zu uberprufen, der zufolge die Institution der drei sakralen "Konige" der Toba-Batak eine Parallele in den Potao der Jarai ("Konig des Feuers, des Wasser und des Windes") hat. Im Laufe der Untersuchung zeigte sich, dass bei beiden Gesellschaften die Institution der sakralen Fuhrer mit einem bestimmten Muster der Interaktion, die diese Hochlandethnien mit den Gesellschaften des Tieflandes verbindet, zusammenhangt.
