El método de la Summa contra gentiles hace posible encontrar elementos útiles para dar respuesta a la búsqueda simultánea de rigor científico y de acercamiento al aspecto antropológico encerrado en la realidad sacramental. En ella se encuentra un pequeño y rico tratado completo sobre los sacramentos, con una unidad que no se encuentra en las demás obras sacramentales de santo Tomás. En esta obra subraya que los

sacramentos realizan lo que significan. A esto se refiere cuando dice que los sacramentos son "actos de Cristo", y -no sólo eso- en la Eucaristía se encuentra su Presencia real.


En este libro se presentan 27 textos que se encontraron en la Summa contra gentiles, que contienen material diferente al contenido recogido en sus otras obras, donde trata sistemáticamente los sacramentos. Se trata de un material inédito que se ofrece para la investigación y el estudio de los

problemas contemporáneos de la teología sacramental. Además, estos textos se muestran en la edición original del manuscrito del siglo xiv, el más cercano al texto original que está perdido, y que se encuentra en la Biblioteca Apostólica Vaticana.


En esta obra, puede decirse que el Aquinate es, en cierto sentido, no sólo medieval, sino que se acerca a la modernidad por la dimensión antropológica que encierra: los sacramentos representan una "unión" -un encuentro- personal con Cristo.
