Der Begriff des Informationszeitalters ist in den letzten 20 Jahren zu einem Leitbegriff in der Charakterisierung von Wandlungsprozessen in Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft geworden: Die revolutionare Durchdringung aller Handlungsebenen durch digitale Informations- und Kommunikationstechnologien und der allerorts mogliche Zugriff auf globale Datenstrome haben einerseits dazu gefuhrt, dass sich das Spektrum der Handlungsmoglichkeiten gesellschaftlicher Akteure erheblich erweitert hat. Andererseits ist im Zuge dieser Wandlungsprozesse Information selbst zu einem elementaren Handels- und Konsumgut geworden, das auf legalen und illegalen Markten gehandelt wird und auf das Teilnehmer globaler Kommunikationsnetzwerke weltweit mit legitimen und illegitimen Mitteln Zugriff nehmen. Folge der skizzierten Entwicklungen ist u.a., dass das Vertrauen der Menschen in ihre Datensicherheit und informationelle Selbstbestimmung zunehmend erodiert. Die in dem vorliegenden Band versammelten Beitrage greifen diese Problematik aus sozialwissenschaftlicher Perspektive auf. Sie analysieren einerseits, an welchen Stellen etablierte Regeln eines okonomisch rationalen Umgangs mit Informationsgutern unter den Rahmenbedingungen eines digitalen Informationszeitalters problematische Externalitaten erzeugen. Sie fragen andererseits danach, wie weit Initiativen der ethischen Selbstverpflichtung von Unternehmen - alternativ oder flankierend zu rechtlichen Verordnungen - einen nachhaltigen Beitrag zur Sicherung insbesondere von Selbstbestimmungsrechten in der informationellen Netzwerkgesellschaft leisten konnen.
