Besonders in der Ökonomie, aber nicht nur dort, wurde lange Zeit ganz im Sinne Adam Smith's "unsichtbarer Hand des Marktes" für eine strikte Trennung von wirtschaftlichem und moralischem Handeln plädiert. Die Entwicklungen besonders in den letzten Jahren zeigen aber, dass sich eine solche Trennung in der Praxis nicht durchhalten lässt. Alles Handeln, und somit auch das Wirtschaften, ist moralischen Bewertungen ausgesetzt. Dieser Umstand macht sich auch im Anspruchsverhältnis von Gesellschaft und Unternehmen deutlich. Letztere werden von verschiedenen Akteuren verstärkt dazu aufgefordert, ihrer Corporate Social Responability (CSR) gerecht zu werden, also ökologische und soziale Verantwortung für ihr Handeln zu übernehmen - und zwar weit über rechtliche Normen hinaus. An vorderster Front dieser Mahner steht insbesondere die Gruppe der Nichtregierungsunternehmen (NGOs), eine Organisationsform, welche in den letzten beiden Jahrzehnten einen regelrechten Boom erlebt hat. Sie sind es, die die Diskussion um die moralische Verantwortung der Wirtschaft am stärksten vorangetrieben haben und weiter vorantreiben - und das auf globaler Ebene. Somit ist es an der Zeit, sich auch aus Sicht der Soziologie mit dem Verhältnis von Unternehmen, NGOs und Gesellschaft zu beschäftigen.
