Inhaltsangabe: Zusammenfassung: Mit der zunehmenden Sensibilisierung der Bevölkerung und der Politik für Umweltprobleme gewinnt die Entsorgung und Vernichtung von Militärchemikalien immer mehr an Bedeutung. Seit Mitte der achtziger Jahre entstand ein immer größeres Spektrum von Aufgaben, angefangen bei der abrüstungs- oder altersbedingten Vernichtung von Kampfmitteln und der Reinigung von Produktionsabfällen bis zur Sanierung von Rüstungsaltlasten aus vergangenen Kriegen. In der Bundesrepublik Deutschland liegt die Hauptproblematik bei den Rüstungsaltlasten aus den beiden Weltkriegen, deren häufigster und persistentester Kontaminant das 2,4,6-Trinitrotoluol (TNT) ist. Seine Giftigkeit ist beträchtlich, aber nicht so gravierend wie die Giftigkeit der Kampfgase. Allein während des Zweiten Weltkrieges wurden in Deutschland ca. 0,8 Millionen Tonnen an TNT produziert. Da die Produktion vorwiegend unter Kriegsbedingungen stattfand, wurden Sicherheitsmaßnahmen weitgehend vernachlässigt. Dies hatte eine erhebliche Kontamination der Produktionsanlagen und deren Umgebung mit TNT und den Nebenprodukten seiner Herstellung zur Folge. Im Deutschen Reich gab es neun große Sprengstoffwerke mit einer TNT-Monatsproduktion von mehr als 1000 Tonnen. Daneben gab es noch 60 weitere Werke, die TNT erzeugt oder verfüllt haben. Ehemals militärisch genutzte Liegenschaften und Produktionsstätten können u. U. eine ernstzunehmende Bedrohung für unsere Umwelt und unser Grundwasser darstellen. Diese Altlasten werden u. a. dann zu einer konkreten Gefährdung der menschlichen Gesundheit, wenn sie in Frischgewässer eindringen und dieses für die Gewinnung von Trinkwasser verwendet wird. Bei der Produktion von TNT wurden zur Kühlung des Reaktionsprozesses und zur Reinigung des Endproduktes ca. 260-300 Kubikmeter Wasser pro Tonne TNT benötigt. Davon fiel etwa 40 Kubikmeter als stark belastetes Abwasser aus der Reinigung der Zwischenprodukte und der Sulfitwäsche an. Wegen des hohen Wasserbedarfs lage
