Ausgehend von Oskar Schlemmers (1888--1943) Bauhaus-Signet aus dem Jahr 1923 analysiert das Buch den Zusammenhang zwischen Mensch und Raum im { OEuvre des Bauhaus-Meisters wahrend seiner Beschaftigungszeit an dieser bedeutenden Architektur-, Design- und Kunstschule. Die vom Signet abgeleitete These, Mensch und Raum -- die zwei tradierten Pole im Werk Schlemmers -- bedingten sich gegenseitig, wird untersucht, hinterfragt und erweitert. Hierdurch gelangt die Autorin zu einem neuen Verstandnis der Beziehung von Mensch, Raum und Kunstfigur in Schlemmers Werk. In einem ersten Schritt wird Schlemmers Streben nach dem typisierten menschlichen Korper betrachtet: Herangezogen werden einerseits Proportions- und Geometriestudien von Leonardo da Vinci, Albrecht Durer und Adolf Zeising. Andererseits finden die physiognomischen Uberlegungen Ricarda Huchs und Carl Gustav Carus` Eingang in die Untersuchung der Entindividualisierung des Menschen. Hierauf baut eine Auseinandersetzung mit dem Raumverstandnis Oskar Schlemmers auf. Sie analysiert den theoretischen und gebauten Raum in Schlemmers { OEuvre im Spiegel der Relativitatstheorie Albert Einsteins, der Debatten am Bauhaus und der zeitgenossischen Architektur. Theoretische Schriften und der einzig uberlieferte Architekturentwurf Schlemmers vervollstandigen die Darlegung. Die Untersuchung eines umgekehrten Einflusses des Raumes auf den menschlichen Korper vollzieht sich uber die Erweiterung der tradierten Dyade des Schlemmerschen { OEuvres: Die Kunstfigur, zu der unter anderem die weltberuhmten Kostume und Masken des Triadischen Balletts zahlen, wird als dritter eminenter Pol neben Mensch und Raum etabliert.
