Es gibt eine kaum zu überblickende Anzahl islamistischer Gruppierungen. Ihre Mitglieder sind oft transnational vernetzt, was es den westlichen Staaten, gegen welche die islamistische Ideologie ausgerichtet ist, erschwert gegen sie vorzugehen. Durch islamistisch-terroristische Anschläge, wie die vom elften September 2001, das Attentat auf Charlie Hebdo oder die Anschläge am Brüsseler Flughafen setzt sich in den Köpfen vieler Menschen eine allgemeine Skepsis gegenüber dem Islam fest, basierend auf einem Mangel an Wissen über die Unterscheidung zwischen Islam und seinen extremistischen Ausprägungen sowie deren Entstehungshintergründen, weshalb Aufklärungsarbeit in diesem Bereich von großer Wichtigkeit ist, um Angst und Intoleranz innerhalb der Gesellschaft vorzubeugen. Diese Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit Ursprüngen des Islamismus und damit, welche Faktoren in besonderem Maße zur Entstehung des Feindbilds "Antiwestlertum" beigetragen haben. Aufgrund der Pluralität an islamistischen Strömungen kann dies nur exemplarisch dargelegt werden. Der Betrachtungszeitraum ist das 20. Jahrhundert, in dem Vereinigungen gegründet wurden, aus denen sich die modernen Erscheinungsformen des Islamismus entwickelten, wie wir sie heute vorfinden. Da eine Schwierigkeit bei der Beschäftigung mit dem Thema darin besteht, dass es sich um ein komplexes Phänomen handelt, dass selbst in der Fachliteratur unter verschiedenen Begriffen geführt wird, wird mit einer Definition der Begriffe begonnen, die in der Arbeit verwendet werden.
