About the Author: Colleen N. Thrailkill, Ed.D., began teaching elementary school in 1974. Over a long career, until she retired in 2010, she taught kindergarten, first grade, second grade, and third grade in the classroom. In 1999, she earned a Doctor of Education degree in curriculum and instruction and worked as a resource teacher for elementary-level gifted and talented students for the rest of her career.
