Vanilla High spielt im Jahre 2048, wenige Jahre, nachdem Außerirdische die tropische Insel La Reunion besetzt haben. Dort lebt der Journalist Arul Ramassamy, ein Mitvierziger, der entschieden gegen das Unsterblichkeitsprogramm ist, mit denen die Außerirdischen die Insel überziehen. Sie bieten den Menschen die Unsterblichkeit, niemand muss mehr altern. Reunion ist isoliert in einer Welt großer politischer Machtblöcke, aber niemand traut sich Reunion anzugreifen, da die Menschheit den Tabok technologisch weit unterlegen ist. Die Tabok selbst mischen sich in die Geschicke der Welt nicht ein. Die menschlichen Bewohner von Reunion leben ein Leben in Wohlstand, da sie voll von den Segnungen der Tabok profitieren. Dies ist der Ausgangspunkt des Romans "Vanilla High". Wir erleben in Ich-Erzählung die Auseinandersetzung des Protagonisten Ramassamy mit dem scheinbar segnungsreichen Geschenk der Unsterblichkeit.. Ramassamy ist indischstämmiger Herkunft, ist aber vom Hinduismus seiner Familie zum Katholizismus konvertiert. Er bekommt vom Memento, einer hiesigen Zeitschrift den Auftrag nach Vancouver zu reisen, um dort Aubrey de Grey, Peter Thiel und Mark Zuckerberg (heute lebende Realpersonen) zu interviewen, die für viel Geld von Reunion Pläne gekauft haben, um selbst Life Center für Unsterblichkeit in den USA aufzubauen. Das erste soll in wenigen Wochen in Vancouver eröffnet werden. Vancouver und Kanada gehören in einer durch den Klimawandel veränderten Welt inzwischen zu den USA, die zu einer evangelikalen Oligarchie geworden ist, in der wieder die Prohibition gilt, etwas, was der Protagonist gar nicht mag, da er gerne und viel Rotwein trinkt. Besonders im Gewürzpark seines Bruders trinkt er gerne Rotwein und nimmt dazu Ganja-Kekse, sucht damit seinen inneren Frieden, eine Gemeinsamkeit mit den Außerirdischen, die auch gerne den Park besuchen, da sie die einheimische Vanille rauchen, von der sie in eine Art Erleuchtungszustand gebracht werden. Ramassamy hat eine verheiratet
