About the Book

Avoir servi les armées françaises pendant pas moins decinquante-deux années; avoir pris part à près de cinquantesièges victorieux (parmi lesquels ceux de Strasbourg et de Lille); avoir - en qualité de commissaire général des fortifications -« cadenassé » plusieurs dizaines de places et avoir créé neuf villes... Avoir plaidé en faveur du Rappel des huguenots peu de temps après la révocation de l'édit de Nantes et conçu le projet d'une Dîme royale pour réformer une fiscalité aussi injuste qu'incohérente: autant de titres qui ont valu à Sébastien Le Prestre, sieur de Vauban (1633-1707), une gloire et une popularité inentamées qui l'ont pour ainsi dire momifié et ont permis de forger une légende dorée: n'a-t-on pas fini par faire de ce serviteur zélé de la monarchieabsolue un devancier des Lumières, de cet artisan du « pré carré » louisquatorzien l'un des premiers théoriciens des frontièresnaturelles et de ce soldat inflexible une sorte de saint laïc ?On en oublie les efforts déployés dès son jeune âge par un rejeton de la petite noblesse du Morvan pour accéder aux plus hautes charges et s'intégrer aux grandes clientèles de la Cour, solliciter grades et gratifications, arrondir son domaine morvandiau, allier ses filles à des familles huppées (en cela il ne diffère guère des autres grands commis de Louis XIV). Ce n'est pas diminuer les mérites et le rôle de Vauban que - grâce à des documents jusque-là inexploités - de le replacer dans son milieu, dans son cadre de vie, dans les mentalités de son temps. C'est au contraire donner tout son sens et toute sa singularité à l'oeuvre d'un stratège authentique, d'un ingénieur et architecte aux vues révolutionnaires, d'un organisateur infaillible, d'un observateur attentif des réalités sociales et économiques d'une France parcourue en tous sens des décennies durant. Démêler la part de vérité et la part de légende relatives àun personnage aussi incontesté que Vauban, c'est enfin envisager l'histoire militaire du Grand Siècle d'un oeil radicalement nouveau.Parue pour la première fois en 1996, cette biographie estdevenue l'ouvrage « classique » sur Vauban. En voici une nouvelle édition revue et corrigée, à l'occasion de l'année Vauban célébrée par de nombreuses institutions françaises et internationales.Professeur à l'université Paul-Valéry, Anne Blanchard (1921-1998) a axé ses recherches sur l'histoire militaire (en particulier sur les ingénieurs et leurs oeuvres) et sur le passé du Languedoc.
