In seiner langen Geschichte schwankte seine Macht und Stabilität sowohl innen- als auch außenpolitisch. Mehrmals in der Geschichte dieses Weltreiches waren es einzelne Persönlichkeiten, welche das Schicksal ihrer Zeitgenossen bestimmten. Dabei gab es verschiedene Arten, wie dies geschehen konnte. Neben Kriegen gegen andere Völker und Reiche, zwangen auch innere Konflikte, wie Aufstände und Bürgerkriege, der jeweiligen Zeit ihren Stempel auf. Der Erfolg war dabei freilich ebenso verschieden, wie jene Charaktere, die als Hauptakteure der Konflikte auftraten. Großen Eroberungen nach allen Himmelsrichtungen hin standen in der römischen Geschichte auch katastrophale militärische Niederlagen entgegen. Ähnlich erscheint es bei den innenpolitischen Kämpfen. Neben den Erfolgen eines Sulla oder Julius Cäsar verblassen heute in der breiten Öffentlichkeit zu Unrecht jene Aufständischen, die mit ihrer Rebellion keinen Erfolg hatten. Einer von diesen ist Lucius Sergius Catilina. Seine Erhebung fand 63 v. Chr. statt und endete mit seinem Tod im darauf folgenden Jahr. Catilinas Umsturzversuch befindet sich zeitlich somit zwischen jenem von Sulla und Cäsar und damit in einer äußerst brisanten Zeit der späten Römischen Republik. Trotz ihres Scheiterns hatte die Verschwörung für viele Zeitgenossen sowie für die weitere Geschichte der Römischen Republik große Bedeutung. Auch zeigt sich an den späteren Triumphen Cäsars, dass ein Aufstand zur damaligen Zeit durchaus Erfolgschancen hatte. Die Verschwörung ist uns heute vor allem aus zwei zeitgenössischen Quellen bekannt. Zum einen aus den vier "Catilinarischen Reden"1 des Cicero, welche er parallel zu den Ereignissen rund um die Rebellion im Senat bzw. vor dem Volk in Rom hielt.2 Zum
