Eine Wiederentdeckung, zugleich die längst überfällige Würdigung eines zu Unrecht in Vergessenheit geratenen Dirigenten - die erste Biographie Frieder Weissmanns entwirft das faszinierende Porträt eines außergewöhnlichen Menschen und Musikers und erzählt eine berührende deutsch-jüdische Geschichte im 20. Jahrhundert. Der in Frankfurt a. M. aufgewachsene jüdische Kantorensohn Frieder Weissmann (1893-1984) war in den "Goldenen Zwanzigern" des vorigen Jahrhunderts einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Dirigenten der jüngeren Generation. Er arbeitete mit allen großen Stars aus Oper und Konzert zusammen und war ein Markenzeichen des damals größten europäischen Schallplattenkonzerns. 1933 von den Nazis zur Emigration gezwungen, gelang Frieder Weissmann im europäischen Ausland, in Süd- und Nordamerika eine zweite Karriere. Noch bis in die 1970er Jahre war er dort ein gesuchter Orchestererzieher und Gastdirigent. In seiner deutschen Heimat blieb der im "Dritten Reich" verfemte Dirigent nach 1945 weiter vergessen und für die Medien, die Musikwissenschaft und die Exilforschung bis heute ein unbeschriebenes Blatt. In jahrelanger Arbeit rekonstruierte der Autor die Biographie des verkannten Dirigenten Frieder Weissmann. Das gründlich recherchierte Buch entreißt das bewegte Schicksal des Künstlers, dessen Leben fast ein ganzes Jahrhundert umspannte, der Vergessenheit und erhellt ein bislang unbekanntes Kapitel deutscher Musik- und Exilgeschichte.
About the Author: Jahrgang 1944, studierte Germanistik, Anglistik und Amerikanistik in München, Tübingen und Medford, Mass., USA. Nach beruflichen Stationen im deutsch-amerikanischen Kulturaustausch und in der evangelischen Publizistik wechselte er 1980 zum Ersten Deutschen Fernsehen (ARD) und war dort dreißig Jahre lang als Spielfilmredakteur tätig, zuständig u. a. für die erfolgreichen Verfilmungen von Henning Mankells "Wallander"-Krimis mit Krister Henriksson und Kenneth Branagh. Als Autor ist Rainer Bunz in jüngerer Zeit vor allem mit historischen Veröffentlichungen hervorgetreten.
