Die Hinterfragung des Dargestellten, die Entlarvung von Lebenslügen der Protagonisten und das Interesse an der Kommunikation überhaupt mögen Gründe für das Wiederaufleben dieser Technik sein, derer sich auch Christoph Peters in seinem ersten Roman bedient, wenn auch mit anderer Zielsetzung. Thomas Walkenbach, ein arbeitsloser Kunsthistoriker, der an seiner Dissertation über die Bedeutung der Zentralperspektive arbeitet, verliebt sich in seine Zahnärztin Hanna und wird erhört. Elf Jahre verleben die Beiden zusammen, wie wir in der rückblickenden Erzählung Walkenbachs erfahren, ohne dass er zu einem Abschluss seiner Arbeit kommt, und am Ende stirbt Hanna an Brustkrebs. Was in der äußeren Handlung reichlich merkwürdig daherkommt, erweist sich als ein pfiffiges Werk, das künstlerischen Anspruch mit guter Lesbarkeit mühelos verbindet. Walkenbach, desillusioniert und Alkoholiker, so scheint es, lässt sein Leben mit Hanna in einzelnen Szenen Revue passieren, die sich mosaikartig zusammensetzen lassen. Wir erfahren von seiner Kindheit im niederrheinischen Niel, von seiner ländlichen Familie, die im Kontrast zu der Hannas steht und zu der er, der erste akademische Spross, ein nicht unproblematisches Verhältnis hat; von der erfolglosen Arbeit am Werk eines niederrheinischen Schnitzers und einer Italienreise, die im ländlichen Nirgendwo endet, doch macht es den Reiz dieses Buches aus, dass sich keine der Informationen unkritisch übernehmen lässt. Manches ist Traum, das ist klar, doch wo sind die Grenzen?
