Das Treffen war ebenso überraschend wie heiß und blutig gewesen. Aus der dicken Nebelwand, die überm Nordermeer lastete, als ob sie alle Sturmesschrecken der vergangenen Nacht verhüllen wollte, war plötzlich lautlos und gespenstisch die feindliche Kogge aufgetaucht. Fast hätten beide Schiffe einander gerammt. Hüben wie drüben standen die schattenhaft aus den Dunst auftauchenden Männer sekundenlang verblüfft, ehe sie zu den Waffen griffen. Dann aber hatte Harald blitzschnell seinen Entschluß gefaßt. Ein hochbordiges Kampfschiff, mit Wurfgeschützen gut ausgerüstet, ohne Wimpel und Erkennungszeichen! Seeräuber! Durch die gnadenreiche Fügung der heiligen Jungfrau ihm geradenwegs ins Netz gegangen! Seeräuber, die verrufenste Plage, die am wütendsten gehaßte Pest; Galgenvögel, die den nach England, Dänemark, Norweg segelnden Kauffahrern überall auflauerten, die Küstendörfer überfielen und verbrannten, von Jahr zu Jahr frecher wurden und selbst davor nicht mehr zurückscheuten, umwallte Städte anzugreifen. Seeräuber! Ihretwegen kreuzte Harald mit seinen Getreuen nun fast zwei Jahre lang auf der Flut, und manchen Mordgesellen hatte er an die Rahe knüpfen lassen. Hatte auch manchmal hart um den Sieg ringen, ja des öfteren zornknirschend von der übermächtigen Beute ablassen müssen ... Hell hallten seine Befehle über Deck. Die da drüben, das erkannte er auf den ersten Blick, waren keine Milchbärte und Zärtlinge, sondern aufs Äußerste gefaßt wie sie. Während des Butenspälers Bug von dem Fremden nicht mehr abließ und vom Oberdeck die Enterhaken niedersausten, schickten die Angegriffenen schon Pfeile aus den Armbrüsten her und brachten ihre auf dem Mitteldeck drohenden Bliden in Stellung. Aber Harald war schneller. Er als Erster auf dem Räuberschiff - wie durfte da einer seiner wackeren zurückbleiben!
