D'autres, au contraire, l'accusent d'une avarice et d'une mesquinerie sordides, jusqu'à envoyer vendre les comestibles dont on lui faisait présent. Un jour, il avait demandé un poulain à Diphilidès, l'éleveur de chevaux, et il avait essuyé un refus: il le menaça de faire bientôt de sa maison un nouveau cheval de bois; donnant à entendre qu'il susciterait à ce personnage des querelles de famille et des procès avec ses parents. Nul ne porta jamais l'ambition aussi loin que Thémistocle. Dans sa jeunesse, lorsqu'il était encore peu connu, il obtint, à force de prières, d'Épiclès d'Hermione, joueur de lyre fort goûté des Athéniens, qu'il vînt donner ses leçons chez lui, afin qu'on vît sa maison recherchée du public et toujours pleine. Une autre fois, il alla aux jeux Olympiques, et il y voulut l'emporter sur Cimon, par le luxe de sa table et de ses tentes, par la magnificence des habits et des équipages; mais sa vanité déplut aux Grecs. On croyait pouvoir passer ces fantaisies à Cimon, encore jeune, et qui était d'une des premières maisons d'Athènes; mais que Thémistocle, un homme nouveau, osât ainsi s'élever au-dessus de sa fortune, c'était, aux yeux des Grecs, une arrogance ridicule. Une autre fois encore, à la représentation des tragédies, il fut le chorége du poëte vainqueur; car c'était déjà le temps où ces concours excitaient une vive émulation, une ambition passionnée. Thémistocle consacra, dans un temple, un tableau de cette victoire, avec cette inscription: Thémistocle, de Phréar, faisait les frais; Phrynichus18 menait la représentation; Adimante était archonte. ..."
