Das Opernschaffen von Bedrich Smetana (1824-1884) und besonders die zweite seiner Opern, Prodana nevesta (Die verkaufte Braut), haben nicht nur in der Entwicklung der tschechischen Musiktradition, sondern auch in der nationalen Entwicklung des Landes eine besondere Rolle gespielt. Prodana nevesta ist zum Massstab fur alle nachfolgenden tschechischen Opern geworden und ihre Stilisierung zu einem Manifest der Nation hat schon zu Lebzeiten Smetanas eingesetzt. In diesem Kontext haben sich die Autoren der vorliegenden Publikation die Frage nach der ubernationalen Wirkung und Rezeption der Oper gestellt: Was hat Die verkaufte Braut fur Wien und daruber hinaus fur die osterreichisch-ungarische Monarchie bedeutet? Denn es war die Haupt- und Residenzstadt Wien, in der diese Oper 1892 (noch in tschechischer Sprache) das erste Mal im deutschsprachigen Raum aufgefuhrt worden ist, es war wieder Wien, wo sie 1893 das erste Mal auf Deutsch gespielt wurde, und es war die Wiener Hofoper, von der aus sie 1896 ihren Weg auf alle Buhnen der Welt gefunden hat. - Die verkaufte Braut wurde als Manifest der tschechischen Nation in einer Zeit der nationalen Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Wien und Prag verstanden, andererseits aber als Chance einer ubernationalen Verstandigung rezipiert. Das spiegelt sich in den Akten der Wiener Hofoper ebenso wider wie in den Auffuhrungskritiken der Wiener Tages- und Fachpresse, die hier erstmals vorgelegt werden. Ein ausfuhrlicher Anmerkungs- und Kommentarteil sowie detailgenaue Biographien der handelnden Personen unterstreichen die problemorientierte Vorgangsweise der Autoren. Nicht zuletzt werden die Ergebnisse der tschechischsprachigen Forschung zum musik- und theatergeschichtlichen Umfeld der Verkauften Braut erstmals ausserhalb ihres Entstehungslandes bekannt gemacht.
