About the Book

Vintage Madog E-Book Review: Celebrating Greyhounds, Cindy Hanson, Editor in Chief, Fall, 2011.Vintage Maddog is educational in an entirely different way. For many years, Bob McKinnon has written a regular column for The Greyhound Review about the adventures of Maddog McDermutt, a fictional Greyhound trainer, and his colleagues at the dog track, stories appearing in The Greyhound Review as far back as 1978.If you have read McKinnon's column, you may question my characterization of Vintage Maddog as educational (or as one of McKinnon's characters might put it, you might wonder what I am smoking). While the Maddog stories are exaggerated for humorous effect, they prompt the reader to think about the lives of dog men. When your pampered pet was still a professional athlete, he spent his time with these people. Dog men are the people and not always male and who take care of and maintain racing greyhounds. Based on the stories in Vintage Maddog, when dog men aren't working with the dogs, they hang out with each other at the track: watching with each other at the track: watching the races, bragging about their dogs, joking with each other, comparing results, swapping stories about the owners, and displaying an attitude about track management that could charitably be described as skeptical. If you are familiar with dog men, you will find some aspects of these characters familiar. In addition to Maddog, the stories include characters such as Fleas Finnigan, Hugh Mungas, Ben Dover, Dogbreath Smith, Mangy Martinez, and Cornelius T. Cratervoid. The characters share a nice camaraderie, and the stories revolve around Greyhound racing.Roger Clark's Book Review: Australia's The Greyhound Recorder September 16, 2010Better known to U.S. Greyhound enthusiasts as Maddog McDermutt, Bob has been a long time contributor to the American Greyhound Review, a monthly magazine which is probably the most widely circulated and read greyhound publication in the world. I came across Bob McKinnon's work via the internet about five or six years ago then had the pleasure of his company on a brief visit to Australia in November 2006 when he stayed with my wife and me, and his visits to meetings at Healesville and The Meadows, then the Greyhound Adoption's Christmas Party at Seymour in 2006, all received great coverage in feature articles in the U.S. Greyhound Review. As Maddog McDermutt, Bob McKinnon offers readers a monthly dose of all sorts of advice on Greyhound racing, his trips around the country, and satirical short stories that continue to be sought after to this day, classic and irreverent adventures as told by the master himself from the heyday of greyhound racing.Bob claims that his alter ego Maddog McDermutt is not the Daymon Runyon of Greyhound racing but rather that Daymon Runyon is the Maddog McDermutt of horse racing. Vintage Maddog is a must read for anybody who has ever been to a dog track, adopted or stopped to pat an adopted Greyhound, and dog lovers in general, and if you like racing of any kind, or appreciate humanity's best friend, you'll love these off the-wall gems. type in Vintage Maddog, and hit the icon, you won't be sorry, well done old mate.
