About the Book

It is 1965. John Garnett is 18 years old and on the verge of adulthood. The author is the narrator. He uses John's sharp wit to tell his story. This is sometimes expressed through the cathartic 'radio voice' of his imagination. Humour, satire and nostalgia are the tools to steer the reader through an entertaining account of John's next two years. John uses the rose-coloured spectacles of humour to escape the reality of his dysfunctional family life. He trades the rural tranquillity of East Anglia for student life in the newly emerging, concrete utopia of the City of Birmingham. He is looking forward to training as a teacher - a virgin pedagogue. History in the making evolves around him. Novel fragrances of freedom are in the air. Our hero is on a roller coaster. John's experiences belie much of the folklore of the sixties. The novel provides an arena where the author's portrayal of the flip side of that period sees reality lock horns with myth. For some, the revolutionary evolution took longer to flower than legend would suggest. Share the sensation of growing up in this brave new world. Topical events and popular culture are integral to the work.
About the Author: Stig Tomas was born in Norfolk, England. He uses the East Anglian landscape, its places and people as inspiration for his writing and art work. Norfolk was the setting for his previous novel, 'Indirect Hit'. The story contains mystery, adventure and romance. The hero is an American air force pilot stationed in Norfolk. The new novel, 'The Virgin Pedagogues' is semi-autobiographical. Reality with a touch of theatre and satire! It is set in post-war Birmingham, when the city was being rebuilt in the modernist style of the 1960s. As well as these novels, Stig has published two children's books. 'Starlight' is an illustrated children's sci-fi story. 'But It Wasn't Me Miss' is an illustrated story about a girl who likes to play tricks on people. 'Bankers & Banking' is a cartoon book which takes a satirical look at the world of banking. Stig loves the culture and countryside of rural France and this is reflected in his art work. He specialises in Fantasy Art, Digital Art, Photography, Cartoons and Illustrations. His Fantasy Art work and Illustrated Children's Stories both incorporate encaustic wax paintings, some overlaid with pen and ink drawings. As a photographer, he uses digital technology as an essential part of the creative process. His Comic Strips & Cartoon Books offer commentary on topical aspects of life. For example, he is 'Resident Cartoonist' for 'Living', the regional magazine that embraces, celebrates and supports local life and business in the south west of France. It has been created for the many thousands of English speakers in the region who want information on how to make the most out of living and working in this beautiful area. Stig's cartoon, 'The Fowpars', illustrates, in a humorous way, some of the experiences of an English family living in France.
