About the Book

Alan Wickes is a storyteller. His poetry explores place, character and situation with a cinematic sense of atmosphere and telling detail. The poems' settings reflect his travels, across the Mediterranean particularly, but also in North America. Although the setting is contemporary, at times depicted from a point of view mediated through a lens or recast on-screen, his characters are archetypal - a noir-style sleuth and his femme fatale, the lone traveller, an abandoned lover - romantics unwittingly marooned in postmodernity. Technique too mixes the contemporary and traditional. Diction and subject matter may be drawn from popular culture, but form and structure remains staunchly traditional. Alan Wickes's prize-winning sonnets in particular reflect New Formalist influences. Critic, Anna Evans, reviewing the authors previous collection - Prospero at Breakfast (2008) notes, 'Aficionados of those who enjoy the "modern idiom within a formal verse setting" that Wickes proclaims as his preferential style will savor this collection like an elegant crossword' Voceti develops this approach further. In particular the title piece reflects the author's recent explorations inspired by Situationist derive and psychogeography.
