Das Osmanische Reich entwickelte sich innerhalb von nur zwei Jahrhunderten von einem der vielen anatolischen Kleinfürstentümer türkischer Hirtennomaden zu einer Großmacht, die den Gang der Geschichte Europas und der Welt entscheidend mitbestimmte. Im ersten Themenblock soll der Untergang "des bedeutendsten Staatswesens eines Turkvolkes" näher beleuchtet werden. Leitfrage soll dabei sein, welche Gründe für den Untergang verantwortlich waren. Sind es in erster Linie äußere Einflüsse gewesen? Oder waren es innere Probleme in der Struktur des Reiches? Die Möglichkeit, dass sich diese beiden Faktoren überlagert haben, soll ebenfalls in Betracht gezogen werden. Betont werden muss dabei schon jetzt, dass zur Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts die reichsten und am weitesten entwickelten Gebiete des Osmanischen Reiches im europäischen Teil lagen. Weiterhin lebten in diesen Gebieten annähernd 50 Prozent der gesamten Bevölkerung. Über den Zwischenschritt der Entstehung der jungtürkischen Bewegung soll schließlich der Verlauf des Ersten Weltkrieges, der für die Zukunft des türkischen Nationalstaates weitreichende Folgen haben sollte, dargelegt werden. Dabei werden vor allem die Entwicklungen zwischen dem Diktatfrieden von Sèvres und dem Kompromissfrieden von Lausanne ausführlich aufgearbeitet, um so die Konstituierung der türkischen Republik nachvollziehen zu können.
