Übersetzungen von Opernlibretti sind in der Regel Beispiele ausgesucht schlechter Poesie, die sich aus abgeschmackten Metaphern, hinkenden Versen und abgedroschenen Reimen zusammensetzen. Wer je versucht hat, ein Gedicht aus einer fremden Sprache ins Deutsche zu übersetzen, urteilt milder über diesen Sachverhalt, zumal da es den Übersetzern meist ja noch darum zu tun war, eine singbare Textfassung zu erstellen. Die hier vorgelegte Übersetzung bemüht sich weder um Versmaß noch um Reim oder Sangbarkeit, bietet dafür aber eine inhaltlich und stilistisch eng ans Original sich anlehnende Wiedergabe von Francesco Maria Piaves Text, die eine Ahnung davon vermittelt, was Verdi an dem vielbelächelten Autor geschätzt haben könnte. Italienische Oper steht außerhalb Italiens immer noch in dem Verruf, bloß eruptives Produkt ungezügelter Emotion, gleichsam Lust ohne Verstand zu sein; dabei ist gerade die Kompositionsweise Giuseppe Verdis in einem Maß durch genau bedachtes Kalkül und eine virtuose Beherrschung der kompositorischen Mittel bestimmt, die dem Vorgehen Mozarts oder Beethovens in keiner Weise nachstehen. In seinen Ausführungen versucht Michael Hoyer Verdis intelligentes Eingehen auf die Vorgaben seines Textbuches aufzuzeigen und die Synthesis zu beschreiben, welche Dichtung und Musik zu einem irreduziblen Ganzen verschmilzt.
About the Author: Michael Hoyer studierte Orchesterleitung, aber auch Musikwissenschaft, Germanistik, Philosophie und Allgemeine Sprachwissenschaft. Neben seiner dirigentischen Tätigkeit ist er als wissenschaftlicher und belletristischer Autor, Klavierbegleiter, Übersetzer, Komponist und Lehrer aktiv.
