Beginnend mit einer Studie uber die Wechselbeziehung zwischen August Strindbergs Geldhypochondrie und ihrem Niederschlag in seinem Oeuvre, nahert sich die Aufsatzsammlung Schritt fur Schritt der schwedischen Gegenwartsliteratur. Dabei prasentiert sie den sich vor der Gesellschaft nicht minder spektakular in Pose setzenden Sachbuchautor Sven Hedin. Sie schildert die bedruckenden Existenz- und Arbeitsbedingungen der Feministin Agnes von Krusenstjerna und demonstriert, dass noch der Grosscousin der Dichterin, Olof Lagercrantz, gleich dieser die Gemuter erhitzt. Sie zeigt, dass die in Deutschland kaum bekannte Edith Sodergran durch ihren poetischen Kampf gegen die Schwindsucht der schwedischen Lyrik starke Impulse zu geben vermochte, und erlautert die hierzulande genausowenig nachvollziehbare historiographische Leistung Vilhelm Mobergs. Sie verfolgt die weltanschauliche und schriftstellerische Entwicklung der beiden Nobelpreistrager Harry Martinson und Eyvind Johnson und beleuchtet am Beispiel Christer Kihlmans das komplexe Dilemma der finnland-schwedischen Literatur. Sie legt den Pessimismus Per Christian Jersilds frei und analysiert Sven Delblancs Mythos von der Rolle des Kunstlers. Eine Interpretation zu Lars Gustafssons nach wie vor zentralstem Werk, dem Gedicht "Eine Reise zum Mittelpunkt der" "Erde," steht am Ende.
