Nach einem berühmten vorausschauenden Artikel am 15. März 1968 "langweilt sich" Frankreich1. Dies ist nicht ganz richtig. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt langweilt sich die Fakultät von Nanterre nicht mehr... So plötzlich scheint der Verlauf der Ereignisse ab dem 3. Mai für die überraschte Presse und französische Bevölkerung zu sein, so ungeordnet der Einfall der Studenten, so irrationell der wirre Ausdruck ihrer Empörung, als ob die Protestbewegung aus dem Nichts, aus den ungewöhnlichen Umständen entstehen würde. Und doch kann man deren Wurzel bis zum Neomarxismus der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit zurückverfolgen. Die Bewegung ist zwar zunächst nur auf sehr kleine und gespaltene Kreise beschränkt. Aber zwischen diesen "Neuen Linken", die sich in Frankreich durch vertrauliche Zeitschriften entwickeln2, und dem studentischen Aufstand Anfang Mai gibt es eine entscheidende Stufe, die in Nanterre stattfindet: Eine Verschmelzung zwischen den theoretischen Ansätzen der "Neuen Linken", einigen tatkräftigen linksextremistischen Gruppen und dem Unbehagen der Massen der Studenten. Ende April, d.h. unmittelbar vor dem Pariser Mai, sind schon alle Bestandteile der studentischen Protestbewegung in Nanterre vorhanden und die zukünftigen Entwicklungen können nur im Licht der erworbenen Erfahrung in Nanterre verstanden werden.
