Der Wettbewerb ist schnelllebiger und intensiver geworden. Insbesondere technische Produkte werden nicht mehr nur in einem Land produziert. Damit der Handel dieser Produkte sowohl für Unternehmen, als auch für Verbraucher finanzierbar bleibt, besteht die Notwendigkeit den Markt zu liberalisieren. Hierzu kann der Abschluss von Freihandelsabkommen beitragen. In der Europäischen Union (EU) bildet der gemeinsame Binnenmarkt der EU-Mitgliedsstaaten gem. Art. 28 AEUV die Säule der europäischen Volkswirtschaft. Es ist geregelt, dass es keine Ein- und Ausführzolle zwischen den Mitgliedsstaaten geben darf. Es existiert eine so genannte Zollunion, welchen den Handel innerhalb der EU fördern soll. Um die europäische Wettbewerbsfähigkeit auf dem internationalen Markt zu stär-ken und auszubauen, ist die EU stark daran interessiert mit anderen Ländern, wie beispielsweise den Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika (USA), Freihandelsabkommen abzuschließen. Durch so ein Abkommen sollen die Handelsbeziehungen zwischen der Europäischen Union und den USA intensiviert werden. 2013 machte der Handel zwischen beiden Wirtschaftsräumen rund ein Drittel des gesamten Welthandels aus. Ebenso entfallen rund 50 % des globalen Bruttoinlandsproduktes (BIP) auf die EU und die USA. Diese Zahlen veranschaulichen die Bedeutung beider Wirtschaftsräume und erklären, weshalb ein Abkommen sinnvoll ist. Generell hat auch die im Jahr 1995 ins Leben gerufene Welthandelsorganisation (WTO) die Aufgabe sich mit der Regelung von Handels- und Wirtschaftsbeziehungen zu beschäftigen.
