Das Buch entführt den Leser in das Land Hadeln des 19. Jahrhunderts. Zu jener Zeit war dieser Landstrich sicherlich keine wirtschaftlich bevorzugte Region im Königreich Hannover. So blieb es nicht aus, dass große Teile der Bevölkerung versuchten, ihr Glück im Ausland zu suchen. Der nahe Seehafen Bremerhaven war dabei buchstäblich das Tor zur Neuen Welt. Besonders die Jugend verspürte den Drang auszuwandern. Zeitweise hatte mehr als die Hälfte der Abschlussklasse der Altenbrucher Schule die Absicht, der Heimat den Rücken zu kehren. In der Familie des Autors fanden drei von fünf Geschwistern den Weg nach Amerika; und das vermutlich auch nur, weil eine Schwester im jugendlichen Alter verstarb und die Mutter der jüngsten Schwester die Emigration verbot. Wie groß muss der Leidensdruck da gewesen sein, dass sich die Jugendlichen dieser strapaziösen, ungewissen und nicht selten gefährlichen Zukunft aussetzten, nur um ihren Traum "vun't golle Land an de annere Siet vun den Ozean" zu verwirklichen? Das Buch beschreibt Kindheit und Jugend des Autors in Altenbruch, seine Auswanderung und seine Aufenthalte in Amerika und seinen beruflichen Neuanfang in Otterndorf. Es ist in Plattdeutsch geschrieben, bietet aber auch (synchron) die hochdeutsche Übersetzung.
About the Author: Friedrich Hermann Meyer (1854 - 1942) hat alle Facetten seines Traums von Amerika erlebt und beschreibt sie anschaulich und nuancenreich in der Sprache seiner Heimat - plattdeutsch. Letztlich gab bei ihm der Hang zur alten Heimat den Ausschlag, dass er nach 16 Jahren nach Hadeln zurückgekehrt ist, nicht als reicher Mann, aber doch so wohlhabend, dass er in Altenbruch und später in Otterndorf eine Existenz als Fotograf gründen und seine junge Familie versorgen konnte. Nachkriegswirren des 1. Weltkriegs und sozialistische Revolutionsversuche im Jahr 1919 ließen Land und Leute in Hadeln relativ unbeeindruckt, die Inflation wurde eher schlecht als recht überstanden. Da berührt es einerseits merkwürdig, ist aber andererseits zeitgeschichtlich bedeutsam, dass - zumindest für die Person des Autors - der Traum "Amerika" durch den Dämon "Adolf Hitler" ersetzt wird und alle Hoffnungen darauf gesetzt werden.
