Der verrückte Herrscher Im Jahr 1979 startete in den Kinos "Caligula - Aufstieg und Fall eines Tyrannen". Anspruch des Films war es "to tell the truth as no film ever did." Nach der Premiere waren sich Kritiker und Zuschauer einig: 'Caligula' hielt, was er versprach. Der Film beschritt Wege, auf die bis dato kein anderer Film Fuß gesetzt hatte. Er entpuppte sich als brutales, pornografisches Machwerk. Roger Ebert, ein bekannter amerikanischer Filmkritiker, bezeichnete 'Aufstieg und Fall eines Tyrannen' als schamlosen Müll. Dennoch folgten mehrere Fortsetzungen. Wie der Urfilm stellten diese Fortsetzungen den dritten römischen Princeps als verrücktes, brutales und perverses Scheusal dar. Trotz fehlender Historizität tat die Filmreihe damit interessanterweise nichts anderes, als das Caligula-Bild antiker Autoren zu überzeichnen. Sueton berichtet in seinen Kaiserviten, Caligula habe sein Pferd zum Konsul ernennen wollen. Er bezeichnet den Princeps als "rasenden Wüterich" und stellt klar, dass er nicht nur mit seinen Frauen und Schwestern, sondern auch mit Künstlern und Sklaven, Unzucht trieb. War Caligula wirklich ein so irrationaler, gefühlsgetriebener Princeps, wie ihn sich die Filmproduzenten und die antiken Autoren vorstellen? Oder kann es sein, dass die Rationalität hinter seinen Taten im Nebel der Überlieferung untergeht? Um diese Frage beantworten zu können, bietet es sich an, den Fokus auf eine bestimmte Episode aus Caligulas Regierungszeit zu richten und an ihr exemplarisch zu analysieren, inwiefern sich rationale Muster hinter Caligulas Taten und Entscheidungen erkennen lassen.
