Mit seiner überspitzten These will Zoller Seitz darauf hinaus, dass sich die Endzeitszenarien in den modernen Zombie-Filmen zumeist weniger mit den hungrigen Untoten, als vielmehr mit den Überlebenden und deren Straucheln in einer menschen- und damit letztendlich auch zivilisationsleeren Welt beschäftigen. Spätestens seit George A. Romeros Klassiker NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD handelt es sich bei der Zombie-Invasion in der Regel um eine weltweite Bedrohung apokalyptischen Ausmaßes, mit der die verbliebenen Menschen zu kämpfen haben. Doch sind diese Zombie-Filme, die eigentlich ein Subgenre des Horror-Genres sind, dann überhaupt Horror-Filme oder vielmehr Dramen, Thriller, oder eine Mischung aus allem? Wie verhält sich das Ganze, wenn es anstelle eines 90-minütigen Spielfilms in Form einer Langzeit-Fernsehserie dargestellt wird? Der amerikanische Kabelsender AMC hat dies mit THE WALKING DEAD (im Folgenden TWD) in die Tat umgesetzt und damit die höchste Zuschauerzahl eines Kabelsenders in den USA für eine Serie erreicht. Überhaupt feiern die untoten Ungeheuer ein weitgreifendes Comeback: Eine neue Welle von Filmen wie WORLD WAR Z, ZOMBIELAND und WARM BODIES, aber auch Bücher wie The Zombie Survival Guide und sogar literarische Mash-Ups alter Klassiker à la Pride and Prejudice and Zombies füllen in den letzten Jahren die Kassen und brechen teilweise Rekorde. Die Arbeit wird sich aus genretheoretischer Sicht explizit mit der Serie TWD beschäftigen, anhand derer geklärt werden soll, ob der (Serien-)Zombie sich als Horror klassifizieren lässt.
