Er faszinierte Geschichts- und Literaturwissenschaft gleichermaßen, inspirierte die europäische Kunst und nicht zuletzt auch Friedrich Schiller, dessen monumentales Werk die eingedeutschte Schreibweise des Namens "Wallenstein" verfestigte. Mehrere tausend Untersuchungen, Werke und Stücke haben Leben und Wirken Wallensteins zum Inhalt und seine immer noch währende Bedeutung und Anziehungskraft lässt sich an aktuellen Inszenierungen des Dramas von Schiller in deutschen Theatern ablesen. Dabei wird Wallensteins Platz in der Geschichte, ebenso wie seine Errungenschaften und deren Bewertung seit jeher intensiv diskutiert. Bereits kurz nach seinem Tod 1634 setzte die Beschäftigung mit dem Generalissimus ein, erlebte für das 19. und 20. Jahrhundert eine regelrechte Phase der Hochkonjunktur und ebbte nicht zuletzt dank Golo Manns erfolgreicher Biografie aus den siebziger Jahren nie ganz ab. Wallensteins rasanter Aufstieg, sein finanzielles Geschick, sein unternehmerischer Geist, sein skrupelloses Machtgebaren, seine karriereorientierte Vorgehensweise und sein Erfolg, der in seinem ebenso tiefen Sturz gipfelte, sind auch im beschleunigten Jetzt noch aufsehenerregend. Zwar mag dieses Vokabular heute eher an Londoner Bänker erinnern, aber das ist der Stoff aus dem Träume sind und vielleicht lässt sich acuh damit die enorme Tragweite und Faszination dieses Böhmenherzogs erklären.
