In diesen ersten Bildern fixierten die Steinzeitmenschen Dinge, die sie bewegten: Gegenstände oder Lebewesen aus ihrer unmittelbaren Umgebung, aber auch Darstellungen des Übernatürlichen. Der erste Gebrauch von Schrift diente daher weniger der Dokumentation oder der Erinnerung; vielmehr diente er der Verbindung zwischen eigener Realität und anderen Welten. Zwischen den ersten auf Felswänden aufgemalten Zeichnungen bis hin zu multimedialen Texten im 21. Jahrhundert hat sich die Schrift sowohl optisch als auch hinsichtlich ihrer Bedeutung und Funktion stark gewandelt. Der Frage nachzugehen, inwiefern Schrift auch im Zeitalter der digitalen Medien eine Rolle spielt, wird Inhalt folgender Arbeit sein. In seinem berühmten Werk "Oralität und Literalität. Die Technologisierung des Wortes." stellt Walter J. Ong die These auf, das Schreiben konstruiere das Denken neu. Wie keine andere Technologie habe das Schreiben unser Bewusstsein und unser Denken verändert, so Ongs Behauptung. Folgende Arbeit wird sich mit der Bedeutung der Schrift näher auseinanderset-zen und dabei versuchen zu erklären, ob und inwieweit das Schreiben unser Denken neu konstruiert. Die Arbeit wird sich weitestgehend chronologisch an Ongs Werk orientieren, jedoch auch einige neue Aspekte einbringen. So wird im achten Kapitel der Begriff des kulturellen Gedächtnisses eingeführt, anhand dessen Ongs Thesen bestätigt werden sollen. Im neunten Kapitel sollen Ongs Thesen mit jenen von Eric A. havelock kontrastiert werden. Zentraler Kern der Arbeit ist die Frage, ob und inwiefern das Schreiben unser Denken beeinflusst.
