In einer Zeit, in der die Gegensätze zwischen Arm und Reich in England immer größer wurden, sich der Kontrast zwischen wachsender Proletarisierung und Kriminalität einerseits und der Blütezeit der englischen Kultur und schönen Künste andererseits weiter verschärfte, wurde die Satire zum bevorzugten Stilmittel. Mandeville, der 1670 zunächst in Rotterdam geboren wurde und nach erfolgreichem Studienabschluss in Philosophie und Medizin, erst 1693 nach England übersiedelte, veröffentlichte 1705, zunächst anonym, sein bis heute bekanntestes Werk "Der unzufriedene Bienenstock" als Satire. Da diese Sixpenny-Broschüre auf der einen Seite reißenden Absatz fand, er jedoch auf der anderen Seite die literarischen Kreise Londons mit dem zugrunde liegenden, tabulösen Thema gegen sich aufbrachte, wurden in den darauf folgenden Jahren, nun unter dem bis heute gebräuchlichen Titel "Die Bienenfabel, oder Private Laster, Öffentliche Vorteile", weitere Auflagen herausgegeben. Diese versah Mandeville allerdings mit verschiedenen Essays und Anmerkungen zu fast jedem Vers der Fabel, die die eigentliche Grundlage seiner Gesellschaftskritik bildeten. Diese expliziten Ausführungen bezogen sich auf eine Art Gedicht oder Fabel in Reimform, das für sich alleine wohl kaum einen so hohen Aufmerksamkeitsfokus erreicht hätte. In einem Bienenstock, der aber sehr wohl für die Menschheit (oder die Bevölkerung Englands) steht, herrschen Niederträchtigkeit, Betrug, Korruption und andere schlechte Dinge vor und doch gedeihen der Wohlstand und das Gesamtwohl der Bevölkerung.
