Wie das reizend ist, solch eine junge Birke im April! Vollbehangen mit schlanken grüngelben Kätzchen, die im leisen Wehen durcheinander schaukeln, noch blattlos die feinen Zweige, eine schüchterne schmiegsame Beweglichkeit in dem ganzen Baum, bis zum weißfleckigen hellaufschimmernden Stamme. Solch eine Birke steht vor Medags Gartenpforte, und die Sonne des Nachmittags zeichnet ihren zierlichen Schattenriß auf die grauweiße Wand des einstöckigen Häuschens hinter der Pforte. Und Milli und Liddi Medag blieben jedesmal, wenn sie geschäftig und beladen unter der Birke durchliefen, mitten im Wege stehen, guckten in das Zweignetz mit dem blauen Himmel dahinter, lachten glückselig, kniffen sich mit den freien Fingern gegenseitig in den Arm und liefen dann weiter, während die Zungen auch nicht einen Augenblick ruhten. Sie liefen zu einem zweiten Häuschen, das aber noch viel kleiner war, als ihr Elternhaus hinter dem grüngestrichenen Staket. Es war eigentlich nur ein großes Gartenzimmer mit einer Hausthür und einem Dach: umschlossen ward es von einer lückenhaften, ungleich beschnittenen Stachelbeerhecke; halbgroße Blätter und röthliche Blüthenglöckchen dehnten sich wohlig im Nachmittagsstrahl. Es ist natürlich, daß den zwei frohen, halbwüchsigen Mädchendingern all' diese anderen frohen, halbwüchsigen Dinge außerordentlich gut gefielen, und daß sie in das Gartenhäuschen, zu dem sie die Möbel hinübertrugen, ganz verliebt waren. Milli versuchte im Ueberschwang der Begeisterung sogar eine große weiße Waschkanne auf dem Kopfe zu tragen, gab es aber auf, ganz verwundert darüber, daß eine Waschkanne so schwer sei, und daß die Bardowiekerinnen ihre vollbepackten Gemüsekörbe, die doch warscheinlich noch weit schwerer waren, auf eine so unbequeme Weise trügen. Liddi hatte einen frischlackirten Stiefelknecht zärtlich wie ein Wickelkind in den Arm gedrückt. Sie sahen sich entzückt um.
