About the Book

In 2003, Mark Scheflen, the author of this book, designed and conducted a workshop in Nairobi for HIV and AIDS participants with full-blown AIDS. Fortunately, one of the participants was a teenager named Ruth who was very interested in telling her story. Over 14 years, Scheflen continued to follow Ruth, visiting her at her home and workplace. On visits Scheflen noticed remarkable and positive changes in Ruth's struggle to create a new life and to develop a career with love and devotion toward helping victims of the scourge. Despite hardship and stigma, Ruth continued to share her stories in clinics and communities of rural and urban Kenya. In addition, Ruth started a successful family with two children currently attending school. Scheflen maintains an ongoing relationship with Ruth and her family and this book is a tribute to Ruth's triumph to a meaningful life and service.
About the Author: Mark has a special gift of seeing the best in others. He is a gifted change maker and international healing-artist. He devoted thoughtful care and innovative perspectives to those whose world he entered or enters now, 2017. Since 1996, he created 100s of workshops involving art, photography and storytelling in the USA, Africa and Russia. His work focuses on youth and adults using mediums such as mask making, song, dance, creative writing and bookmaking. Recent projects include one with people living with HIV and AIDS and fighting stigma, and two, The Quarry Project, a workshop-project studying the social, cultural and health effects on both adults and youth working in stone quarries. Other projects include working with youth in cultural exchange projects between secondary schools, universities and cultural centers internationally: "Faces of Youth", "5 Russian Families of St. Petersburg", "Russian/American Artists Exchange" "Grandmothers raising their grandchildren, Kenya", "Russian Soldiers Project", "Fishermen of Lake Victoria", "Fighting Stigma Using Mask, Storytelling and Dance". Mark Scheflen's work has been exhibited internationally in educational and cultural centers, as well as, galleries and museums. Interdisciplinary innovators, change makers, and NGOs will be inspired by Ruth's Story and Mark's desire to tell this transformational journey with sensitivity and profound integrity.
