We Made Plans is a fictional story that chronicles the lives of a group of long-time friends and intertwines the harsh reality of active shooter events in the United States of America. The author develops the characters and their relationships with one another, lulling the reader with intricate details in anticipation of what happens next in their lives, individually and collectively. As real life would have it, things can change in an instant, and they did for this group of friends. Being unprepared for such an event, it was paramount for the main character, Racquel, to discover how to prepare going forward. Racquel's character implored others to be proactive and deliberate in giving thought to what to do in the event one is ever involved in an active shooter situation. Her post mass shooting response was designed to make one think about his/her surroundings, take note of people in their presence, and determine the exit strategy options such as Run Hide Attack.
While it's not something to be consumed with daily, it is something to give, at the very least, a fleeting thought. Look for those exit signs! What object can provide cover to slow down or prevent the penetration of bullets? Where in the office, mall, building or place of employment can one hide if necessary? What everyday item such as a chair, scissors or steaming pot of hot coffee, can serve as a weapon against an active shooter?
We Made Plans examines the aftermath of such a destructive event and how these long-time friends cope with its effect while others go on obliviously with the routine of their daily lives. It examines the impact of the failure to say something when one has observed or suspected something because of your relationship to the person capable of committing such a heinous crime. Lastly, there has been a societal pivot toward the need for everyday citizens to fight back before law enforcement arrives. Fight, ONLY AS A LAST RESORT, because your life and the plans you made with those you love, depend on it. Be deliberate and relentless in your attack. No holds barred.
While finishing up the fictional book, We Made Plans, two real, horrific and devastating active shooter events occurred within less than 24 hours of each other in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, in the United States.
