Das Buch zeichnet die entscheidenden Aspekte der Beziehung zwischen Medien und dem Konzept der Repräsentation nach. Die möglichen Verbindungen zwischen den beiden Konzepten haben zur Entstehung dessen geführt, was als Medienrepräsentationstheorie bezeichnet wird. In diesem Buch gehe ich jedoch aus verschiedenen Perspektiven der Frage nach, wie britische muslimische Gemeinschaften in den britischen Medien dargestellt werden. Ich konzentriere mich auf solche Darstellungen in den neuen Medien, insbesondere in den digitalen webbasierten Medien, und weniger auf die klassischen harten und elektronischen Medien. Interessanterweise befasst sich dieses Buch auch mit der Frage, wie die muslimische Identität in den Mainstream-Medien dargestellt wird und wie sie von einem vielfältigen Medienpublikum verarbeitet und konsumiert wird. In der theoretischen Tradition der Publikums- oder Rezeptionstheorie wird argumentiert, dass die passive Rezeption hegemonialer Darstellungen des Islam und der Muslime mit dem Aufkommen dessen, was als Media Studies 2 oder Web 2.0 Studies bezeichnet wird, nicht mehr möglich ist.
