About the Book

Well-Being and Success for Online University Students uses the PERMA+4 framework to help distance learning students to strengthen their health, well-being and to make their study journey more enjoyable.
The concept of traditional education has changed radically within the last decade. Considering how much emergency remote online learning has expanded over the global pandemic of COVID-19, we can safely state that online and distance learning has become an essential part of future education. This book introduces PERMA+4, an evidenced framework for enhancing well-being and positive functioning, including academic performance to emphasize practical applications of findings from the best available research to have students learn several steps they can take to strengthen their academic well-being and performance. In doing so, this guide will present evidence-based practices designed in a way to help readers to improve their mental health and study outcomes while bridging the research-to-practice gap.

About the Author:

Jana Koci, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Health and Well-being Education at Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic. She is a leading researcher and educator on building well-being in her country and she wrote this book based on her deep care for her students. She teaches a popular Student's Well-being class for Charles University students and also for students from European Universities off 4EU+ alliance, based on the content of the book you hold in your hands. She leads a research on students well-being at her university and her sincere care for her students is reflected in her excellent student evaluation. Jana graduated with the honours for outstanding academic achievements and she was honoured for outstanding young researcher contribution by the EFSA European Food Safety Authority committee in 2015. Jana is a visiting professor at Claremont Graduate University in California where she works on independent research in positive psychology and she also spent several semesters at the University of Nebraska - Lincoln designing a nutrition education program for Czech students. She earned her Ph.D. in Pedagogy with concentration in Health Education and she focuses her research on application of positive psychology into academic environment through building well-being of university students. She is a member of Positive Education Consortium and she also enjoys writing books on well-being care for middle schools and high schools. Jana appreciates discussions with her dear colleagues while teaching courses for professors on How to Build Well-being of Our Students and she also strives to support well-being of teachers, professors and all academic personnel in her Well-being for Academics course. She is a Co-Active well-being coach and founder of Uniwellsity. She deeply respects and appreciates the science of well-being, she enjoys working with her students and she cares for well-being of the whole academic community. And you were her main motivation to write this book on one breath.

Stewart I. Donaldson, PhD, is Distinguished University Professor and Executive Director of the Claremont Evaluation Center at Claremont Graduate University. He is deeply committed to improving lives through positive psychology research and education. He is Co-Founder of the first Ph.D. and research focused masters programs in positive psychology at Claremont Graduate University, and mentors many graduate students specializing in positive psychology and evaluation science. Professor Donaldson serves on the Council of Advisors for the International Positive Psychology Association (IPPA), is Faculty Advisor for the Student Division of IPPA (SIPPA), served on the IPPA Board of Directors (2013-2017), and was Chair of IPPA's World Congress of Positive Psychology in Los Angeles (2013). He has published numerous articles, chapters, and books on the science of positive psychology including Well-Being and Success of University Students: Applying PERMA+4 (2023, this volume), Zdraví a mentální well-being studentů distančního vzdělávání (2022); Positive Organizational Psychology Interventions: Design and Evaluation (2021); Positive Psychological Science (2020); Toward a Positive Psychology of Relationships (2018); Scientific Advances in Positive Psychology (2017); and Applied Positive Psychology (2011). Professor Donaldson has been honored with many career achievement awards for his research and evaluation contributions including the 2021 IPPA Fellow Award, 2019 IPPA Work and Organizations Division Exemplary Research to Practice Award, and the 2019 SIPPA Inspiring Mentor Award.
