Wissenschaftlicher Aufsatz aus dem Jahr 2003 im Fachbereich Geschichte - Asien, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die Südflanke der ehemaligen Sowjetunion ist eine alte, geschichtlich gewachsene Konfliktregion. Hier kreuzten sich bereits vor Jahrhunderten türkische, persische und russische Interessen. Nachdem sich Russland im Verlauf des 19. Jahrhunderts Mittelasien einverleibt hatte wuchs die Rivalität mit dem englischen Kolonialreich um den Export von Baumwolle und später um das Erdöl. Erdöl, das in der Region Baku bereits seit alters her bekannt war und in bescheidenem Umfang im Wesentlichen als Beleuchtungs- und Brennstoff diente, wurde für Russland erst nach dem Ende des Krim-Krieges, also nach 1856, von immer größerer wirtschaftlicher Bedeutung. Die Petroleumlampe hatte in Russland und Europa wie auch in den USA zu einer Umwälzung im öffentlichen und privaten Leben geführt, durchaus z. B. mit der des Kühlschranks vergleichbar. Bereits 1873 gab es in Baku nicht weniger als 23 Raffinerien. Größtes Problem für den Absatz der Produkte war jedoch die fehlende Anbindung Bakus an den südrussischen Markt und den Welthandel.Russland wurde zwischen 1898 und 1901 kurzzeitig, beherrscht von westeuropäischem Kapital, zum größten Ölzentrum der Erde. Öl wurde wirtschaftlich und militärisch immer wichtiger, vor allem als Treibstoff für die Kriegsflotten der Großmächte. Um die Rohstoffbeschaffung für die englische Kriegsflotte sicherstellen zu können, kaufte der Royal-Dutch-Shell Konzern 1912 die Besitzungen des französischen Bankiers Rothschild am Kaspischen Meer. Damit hatte englisches Kapital die Vorhand in diesem Gebiet. Im Verlauf dieser Arbeit soll das europäische und insbesondere das britische Interesse an den Gebieten des Transkaukasus betrachtet werden. Von besonderem Interesse sind dabei die Gebiete Armeniens und Aserbaidschans inklusive der Region um Berg-Karabach, da die reichhaltigen Ölvorkommen dieser Region für alle Großmächte, die Mächte der Entente, Russland und d
