Der Pharmamarkt befindet sich seit Jahren in einer Phase anhaltenden Umbruches. Die strategischen Erfolgsfaktoren haben sich im Laufe dieses Prozesses grundlegend verschoben und werden sich weiter verändern. Ansteigende Gesundheitskosten, der Rückgang bahnbrechender Innovationen sowie das Erscheinen und beachtliche Markterfolge von Generika-Anbietern sind die treibenden Faktoren dieser Entwicklung, die den empirischen Hintergrund für die vorliegende Arbeit von Hilleke-Daniel bildet. Auf der wissenschaftlichen Seite hat es in den letzten Jahren wichtige Beiträge zur Wettbewerbsstrategie gegeben, die insbesondere mit dem Namen Porter verbunden sind. Die Arbeit führt diesen Faden fort. Hilleke- Daniel entwickelt zunächst ein allgemeines System wettbewerbsstrategischer Faktoren, dessen Anwendung auch für andere Märkte großen Nutzen verspricht. Er verdichtet weit in der Literatur verstreute Befunde zum LebenszykluskonzePt, zur Rolle neuer Wettbewerber, zur Kostendynamik etc. und stellt sie in einen strategisch relevanten Zusammenhang. Das System wird auf den deutschen Pharmamarkt angewandt, wobei sowohl auf subjektive Expertenschätzungen als auch objektive Marktdaten zurückgegriffen wird. Unter strategischen Aspekten erweisen sich die subjektiven Daten als ergiebiger. Einige wichtige Ergebnisse sind: Der Pharmamarkt gerllt zunehmend in eine Zweiteilung hinein, wobei für den "Innovations wettbewerb" völlig andere Gesetzmllßigkeiten als für den "Imitationswettbewerb" gelten. Es sind folglich sehr differen- zierte Strategien bis hin zu einer Trennung der Organisationen, die die Segmente bedienen, ins Auge zu fassen. Konkurrenzorientierung und -aufklärung sind in der Pharmaindustrie stark unterentwickelt. Eine Verlagerung vorhandener Ressourcen von klassischer Marktforschung auf konkurrenzbezogene Analysen scheint dringend geboten.
