About the Book

Einen Fuchssprung vom Dorfe stand eine Erlengruppe um einen kleinen Teich. Dort wohnte ein sehr alter Frosch. Man nannte ihn den alten Schick. Der Ursprung dieses Namens war niemand bekannt, beliebt war Schick bei den übrigen Dorfbewohnern nicht. In seinem Hause oder in seinem kleinen Königreich, das dicht bevölkert war, ließ er sich von keinem Menschen etwas drein reden. Im Gegenteil, Er dehnte mit Willkür seine Macht bis auf eine Meile und noch weiter im Umkreis aus. Er machte Wetter. Schick sprach zu aller Welt von seinem Froschteich und lobte ihn über alle Maßen. Weil die Erlenbäume mit den glänzenden Blättern ihm wohl als Hüter dienten und ihre Blätter gar rege Unterhaltung mit den Insassen des Teiches pflogen, begriff man das aufdringliche Eigenlob des Herrn Schick, und allgemein lag hinter dem Dorfe noch vor dem Tannenwald das grüne Königreich. Boshaftigkeit nur sagte Krötenloch. Schick mißtraute dem einen Ausdruck, er hielt ihn für Schmeichelei, glaubte den andern nicht, weil er deutlich vom Neide ausging. Nur die, welche mit Bewußtsein zum Froschteich gingen, gingen zu Herrn Schick, und nur die beachtete er. Er haßte aber die, welche seiner Eitelkeit ein Leid. Was das hieß! Es war nicht bloß wie in den großen Städten, wo man über Nacht Rolläden über die glänzenden Schaufenster herabläßt. Das war ein Schluß auf lange. Das wußte jedermann. Das hieß, es wurde ein grimmer Winter. Die Raben flogen vom Walde aufs Feld heraus, sie sammelten sich und dohlten und krächzten laut durcheinander. Die meisten schönen Singvögelein flogen fort in warme Gegenden, um ihren Kehlkopf vor der rauhen Luft zu schützen. Der Bauern Kinder wischten das gelbe Zäpfchen von der Nase und schlüpften in die Strümpfe und mit den Strümpfen in die Schuhe. Die Wäsche trocknete jetzt in der Stube am warmen Ofen. Wer dickes Zeug hatte, holte das aus den Truhen. Die Bettler von der Landstraße bewarben sich um Arbeit und ums Arrestlokal. Das alles kam, wenn Schick schloß.
