About the Book

Hedy Arata started writing in her 80's as a way to process all that she had lived - family, politics, immigration. Hunger. War. Hitler. Now at 91, Hedy's incredible story can be read through this, her collection of poetry.
About the Author: Herta "Hedy" Semff is a walking history lesson. Born in 1924, she moved from Berlin in 1943 to the small village of Schwarzenfeld/Opf., Germany. A gymnast at 14, she performed for Hitler and the world in the Opening Ceremony of the 1936 Olympics. As a teenager, World War II exploded above and around her. Her loved ones were forced to join Hitler's army, including her cousins Fritz and Gerhard who lost their lives during the war. She lost her home, lived with hunger and witnessed the horrors of Hitler's Germany. When she was 18, she worked in an office for a scientist she called "The Professor." He risked his life and saved hers by doctoring paperwork that allowed Hedy, her mother and another co-worker safe passage out of Berlin. When they arrived at the train station, the line was so long it looked hopeless. Following her mother, Hedy and her friend yelled for help as they ran alongside the train. Strangers from inside the train pulled the three women into the already cramped car. That train was the last train to leave Berlin before the railroad tracks were destroyed. Later, Hedy fell in love with American G.I., Frank Arata who was stationed in Germany. After the war, she immigrated to America, reunited with Frank and learned how to speak English. She and Frank married when she was 22 and she became the first German war bride in Milford, Massachusetts. Once settled, she and Frank started a family and had three daughters. They were married for almost 60 years before Frank passed away in 2007. Hedy is now a great-grandmother and is still writing.
